Al Qaeda was conceptualized by Azzan , not Osama, and hence the former’s imprint is directly and firmly embedded in the psyche of it’s leadership. To legitamize Al Qaeda’s Campaign , Osama chose selectively from, and based his arguments on his mentor’s writings. This was borne out after the 9/11 attacks when his deputy al-Zawahir closely echoed Abdullah Azzam’s words when describing Spain as belonging to the Islamic world. The fact that Osama used them to lend credence to his narrow political vision as well to advance his own goals is not widely known nor appreciated. One of the key reasons why he and Azzam parted company in the late 1980/2 was the latter’s firm contention that terrorism was not acceptable as a tactic nor procedure. At that point Egyptian veterans of the Afghan campaign were planning to turn to terrorism on their return home having lived in Egypt Azzam more than understood and appreciated their decision.
