Somalia has been termed by the insurgents as a "failed" state, has no official government to speak of , and is divided into three parts – each is ruled by "local warlords". Despite great denials by political leaders , Al Qaeda has been transporting men , material , and materials through its vast unguarded coastline for many years. It is also more than suspected that Al-Qaeda has established an operational base at the remote island of Ras Komboni. Reports that Somalia might be well be the hiding place of Osama bin Laden has prompted the idea that the US government might well conduct an investigation and exploratory missions there.
