Cold War I had brought neither neither peace nor honor for those that waged it. Neither East nor West was able to prevail over the other , and the very partitions that accompanied its end – in Germany , Korea and Vietnam – symbolized the inconclusive character of its termination. Yet of there were no clear winners, both sides can be side to have gained in some measure from this level and situation of this segment and period of the Cold. On the Soviet side , the leadership could see that that their alliance system was now established from Berlin , Peking and Hanoi , an extraordinary contrast with the situation prevailing before 1945 , let alone that in existence before World War II. The terrible devastation of the "Great Patriotric" or Second World War had given way to an outburst of reconstruction and development in Eastern Europe and the USSR as behind almost sealed frontiers , the construction of socialism went ahead apace. The dynamism of the USSR was later in the decade to find expression in the scientific acheivments of Sputnik and the first manned space flights.

            The establishment of social ownership in all branches of the national economy requires completion of a transition from a cabalistic system to socialism.  Socialism  can well be said to develop on the basis of large scale industry and industries and highly mechanized collective farming.

             Society itself. The working people themselves have both the opportunity as well as opportunities of planning and controlling the production process of the entire national economy on a country wide full scale.  Under capitalism the organization of production occurs in a more or less controlled within the limits of an individual’s or at most within a single monopoly or even a number of monopolies.  But even such planning is well upset by the anarchy  of production that prevails throughout a national economy.  Socialism thus makes possible planned directions of an entire economy of the entire social production mechanism taken as a whole rather than as parts or even piecemeal.

            A new era in the history of mankind began when in an era of planned production that the volume of social production and its structures, the distribution and distributions of labor as a means of production among the various branches of the national economy and economies. Commodity prices and wage rates – all these are no longer under arbitrary uncontrolled sequences and left to chance – gambling as it may seem.  These are planned within society itself, which aims at achieving the greater as well as greater possible satisfaction of the needs of its members.

                  Altogether , the changes in the Party Statutes did not mean that  the Soviet Party system had changed overnight and become fully democratic in what might be perceived in the western model or comprehension.  Everything must be placed in context of what went before and indeed what may come to be.  However the movement was certainly away from the edicts of Stalinism as well as the culture and practice of the Gulag.  The publication of the groundbreaking book of record "A Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich"  was more than telling..  The book was quickly published and republished.  Such a tale and novel could not even of been whispered previously without the telling awakening in the Siberian Gulag himself.  As Ivan noted at the end of the day full of misfortune , endless cold and corruption with half finished building projects littered wastefully across the landscape that in then end "they"  could not take your personal pride in your work away from you.  All in all he remarked that it had not been a bad day evoking the question from the reader – that if that was a good day – then what could a bad or even poor day be ?
